Our Origins
FROM ONE SCHOOL TO A GLOBAL NETWORK
Our curriculum began as a visionary venture in 1998 when Dr. Michael and Olga Block, world-class economists, founded BASIS Charter Schools in Tucson, Arizona. They aimed to exceed educational standards, preparing students for college and beyond through the effective strategy of challenging them. After opening their first school, the Blocks found that a well-crafted, dynamic curriculum, coupled with teachers who genuinely cared about teaching it, led to exceptionally high academic success.

The benchmark math and science assessments, conducted in June 2024, reveal that BASIS Prague's Level 4 students perform on par with their peers in BASIS Charter Schools across the USA. WELCOME FROM THE FOUNDER
"It is my pleasure to welcome you to the BASIS Prague website. My name is Olga Block, and 30 years ago I founded the school system BASIS in the US. Our K-12 schools have been ranked as the best US schools since their establishment, most recently in 2024, the News Week ranked one of our schools, BASIS Peoria, as the #1 high school in the nation.
Knowing that the best time to leave the business is when it is on the top, I decided to sell my education management company and retire from running schools in the US. But before doing that, I fulfilled my long-lasting dream and established a school in the place where I was born, where my grandchildren live, and where I still belong, in Prague.
BASIS Prague opened intending to utilize the best practices from my US educational activities and carry on my never-ending effort to lead an excellent school that combines the best traditions with top-edge new developments in instruction. I am fully invested in this enterprise: financially, intellectually, and emotionally. It is built not only for my grandchildren, but I expect them to bring their children to BASIS, by that time well established as a leading education institution in Prague, the same way BASIS alumni in the US are now bringing their children to the schools we built in the US.
I am extremely pleased when any of you bring your children and grandchildren to share with us the excitement of participating in education that will give them a head start for their lifelong success. They will not only have sufficient knowledge to navigate the complicated world that awaits them, but they will never stop seeking new knowledge. They will appreciate that the harder they work, the more they will enjoy their success, and they will embark on the college phase of their education more than ready."
